On a hilltop, approximately 7km from Cannes, you will find the wonderful village of Mougins, where the focus is more on the quiet, cultured living, as opposed to the busy city lifestyle in Cannes. The surrounding landscape is beautiful with forests of pines, olives and Cyprus trees. The village itself, while effectively a suburb of Cannes connected by the fast penetrante road, is entirely separate, with far more cultured pastimes than its brash neighbour.
The harmony of colours, peaceful surroundings, and quality of light attracted some of the biggest world-famous names of 20th Century culture including Man Ray, Picasso, Cocteau, Yves Saint Laurent, Fernand Leger, Christian Dior, Catherine Deneuve and Edith Piaf, all of which were all regular visitors.
Picasso first came to Mougins in 1936: he then spent the last years of his life there (1961-1973), working in a studio in the middle of the village which is now the tourist information office. The most famous work of his career (the Blue and Rose periods, Cubism and so on) were behind him, but he was prolific during the last few years of his life, particularly the late 60s, with paintings and etchings that came to be recognised after his death as being the foundation of neo-impressionism.
Etchings and linocuts by Picasso from this period are now on display at the new Mougins Museum of Classical Art, opened in 2011, alongside works by Picabia, Cocteau, Matisse, and Chagall and a large collection of Roman, Greek and Egyptian antiquities. Today Mougins is known as being a leading area for the arts, due to its many galleries, artists and museums, including the famous museum of photography. It is also a centre for serious eating with over 40 restaurants including the world-famous Moulin de Mougins and an annual festival of gastronomy.
The average temperature during the summer in Mougins is approximately 34 degrees, often with a slight breeze, meaning it's rarely overly hot, but warm enough for long days spent at one of the town's golf courses or strolling and cycling across the valleys, where you can enjoy some spectacular views.
