Why should you treasure water?
The harsh bottom line is that less than 1% of all the water on Earth is good for people, the remainder are found in the oceans, or in ice pack formations. All this is salt water and would call upon many extra resources to refine and desalinate, making the entire action a non viable substitute.
The population grew from 6 billion people in 1999 to 7 billion people in 2011, that is 1 billion extra people to receive this restricted resource. That is 1 billion people to feed, in consequence greater farms are imperative to benefit this exponential increase, and increased water to grow all these crops.
How can I make certain that I am helping to protect this invaluable resource?
By good luck the heavens effect rain, in some places more than others, still this rain water helps to provide our natural resources, and so I have generally found that rainwater harvesting can not only play a generous role in my "heal the world" part for society, but also economize some hard earned cash for me..
I have 2 polyethylene water depository tanks at my residence, the water collected in these water storage tanks is used for my daily requirements, and in helping me water my garden and top up my swimming pool.
I am now looking into plumbing the water through to my geysers, toilets, washing machine, and dishwasher, and if my calculations are exact I should quarter my municipal water usage.
Can I do more to help on a higher scale?
I have constantly believed that there is effectiveness in numbers, and I do not suspect that it would be an unrealistic dream to request the governments of the world to support local farmers in the procurement of bigger water tanks for their crops and fields. If possible look into not only rainwater harvesting but also storm-water harvesting to diminish the blow that is induced by the agriculture and farming industries of the world.
I see that this will not be nearly enough to obliterate the whole dilemma however it is at least something and could imaginably save millions of kilo litres of water each year if it were correctly imposed by our governments.

Well a manageable internet search on water conservation will turn up recording on the subject, I feel that the information is very thinned, asking you to turn off your tap when brushing your teeth, or bath in less water, or shower for only 1 minute and get water saving shower heads. Even if you keep to all these guidelines you could conceivably notice a 10% drop in water usage, and I do not think that is almost enough for a natural resource and commodity that each and every human requires as a basic life giving essentiality.
With the degree of global warming, and the fact that we as mere mortals have no command over how much rain we get, where we get it and when we will get it. I have to say that I would realize that the general population would try a little harder to save water.
Use water storage tanks for rainwater harvesting for the most productive way of saving water, or of course you could drill your own well, but please keep in mind that this technique is firstly awfully expensive, and secondly that if you advise your local municipality of this they will meter your well and charge you accordingly, as they are of the theory that water under the ground within the confines of their border also belongs to them.
