Multicultural education means the intermingling of different cultures into one single educational system. This system of education opens the doors to the people to know and exchange different cultures with each other. When people from different cultural backgrounds come into one common platform, they develop a sense of respect and empathy towards each other’s culture. This approach of teaching and learning fosters harmony building, respect and cultural pluralism within racial societies. The classroom becomes a knowledge house in this form of education as it acknowledges and incorporates positive racial idiosyncrasies. This system of education has become a need today because it’s very important to have knowledge about different cultures in this globalised world.

Today, teachers in most urban areas face students from a variety of social classes and cultural and language groups. Multicultural classrooms promote decision-making and critical thinking while moving away from inequality of opportunity and toward cultural pluralism. Multicultural education helps children to compete in more competent way in their future life. This system of education is an antidote for countries suffering from racial, ethnic and religious clashes. In the year 2004, one Japanese scholar Ryuko Kubota proposed two perspectives of multicultural education; these are liberal multicultural education and critical multicultural education. The first approach studies the common humanity and natural equality that are prevailed in different cultures, class, languages and genders. The aim of the second approach, on the other hand, is to sustain social transformation by studying and interrogating the previously said constructs by situating them in a specific political and ideological context.

It must be considered that the term multiculturalism is heavily influenced by dominant ideologies of individualism and humanism. The dominance of one particular culture over the other can also be seen if we study different approaches. The aim of multicultural studies often suffers due to some political or cultural interventions. The success of multicultural education lies in equal participation willing people to exchange their culture with one another. We often are attracted towards this system of education due to its luring terminologies such as respect, tolerance and appreciation of different ethnic and cultural groups. Multicultural education is often seen as a contested space where the issues of diversity, power, oppression and resistance are shaped in the context of citizenship and by the affects of globalization.

In recent date, the multicultural education is viewed by many countries as a means to obtain skills for having competent employment skills in the global society. It is viewed as a means of educating citizens about to accept and affirm cultural diversity. In some other countries multicultural education is seen as a way to address equality issues and national solidarity. Economic market forces are reshaping our world in many ways, changing how and where we live. Since the end of World War II, there have been huge changes in the maps of our physical world. These changes also have led to many socio cultural diversities. This is also another reason of the birth of multicultural education. Though some scholars comment that this concept of education creates distinction between communities, some take it as essential to work in this diverse world. Teachers should encourage children to be a part of this system by incorporating effective measures.
