India claims of having one of the oldest civilizations on this planet. More than 80% of Indians are Hindus, divided into various classes and castes, which are further sub-divided into sub-groups and sub-castes. There are also linguistic and regional differences. This social division has existed for hundreds of years. Hence, Centuries have passed but the Indian way of living has more or less remained the same. The same thing applies to marriage.

Most of the marriages in India are arranged marriages. Marriage is considered to be a sacred institution and expected to be a life-long relationship. It is treated as a relationship not just between the boy and the girl, but between two families. Due to this, all forms of background checks and verification of credentials are generally performed by both the families. It is to make sure that both the boy and the girl, and both families are compatible with each other for a healthy relationship to form. One important part of this process is to consult an astrologer and check for Indian astrology marriage compatibility.

As most of the Indians are religious by nature, astrology plays an important role in horoscope matching. In this, Janam Kundli of both the boy and girl is looked at and gunas are matched to judge their compatibility, nature and personality. 18 out of 36 gunas must match for their future happy life. Due to the sanctity of marriage, the families usually act cautiously and do not fix an alliance until the astrologer is satisfied. This is to make sure those traits and qualities of bride and bridegroom are critically examined under astrological parameters. No mistakes are made which might be repented later.

Indian astrology is based on real astronomy, and all the predictions are based on complex mathematical calculations. In Indian astrology marriage compatibility is checked on various factors:

• Mental compatibility
• Physical compatibility
• Generation of wealth as a result of match
• How long attraction will last
• Long life of both
• Prospects of children
• Happiness in relation to children
• Personality match
• Harmony in thinking
• How easy is relationship going to be
• Negative energy and ego problem of partner
• Unfortunate combinations
• Seeking expert (astrologer's ) advice if the match is found to be acceptable but with certain flaws

The concept of checking compatibility in match-making has become very popular. Even common people are found to be doing it, by getting information from books, internet or some other source. This has resulted in many misconceptions as every Tom, Dick and Harry are trying their hands at it, and later blame it as silly superstitions after experiencing failure. In reality, Indian astrology is a very vast science whose knowledge can be mastered only after years of hard word work and practice. For horoscope matching, each planet, sign and aspect of both the boy and girl has to be checked very carefully for their good or bad effects. The time and impact of good and bad yogas also has to be checked for both, and impact on each other. Hence, the complete horoscopes of both the boy and the girl have to be checked before predicting any matches or compatibility.
